How to attain SUSTAINABLE inner balance.
Yoga is the ancient science of the mind, of life! The ancient scriptures are instruction manuals for how to lead a fulfilling human experience, how to tune your instruments, body and mind, how to make them work for you instead of having them work against you with constant self-doubt, worries and desires and how to tap into your true Self, the unlimited source of unconditional balance, contentment, wisdom and joy.
We are souls having a human experience on planet earth
and we manifest ourselves in
the human body and mind as our instruments.
Through this body and mind we operate this human form from within. If we do not understand our instrument completely, we use only a small percentage of its amazing technology and have difficulty operating it. If we are not able to operate this human being from within because we are not aware of our power, we become a servant of our own instrument and are unable to determine our experience of life.
The instrument becomes so powerful that we identify with it, forget who we are and spend our precious life within the limitations and boundaries of our body and mind.
We compulsively follow our mind´s desires and become addicted to consumption and materialism to experience temporary moments of contentment. We lose connection with our TRUE Self which is the source of unconditional contentment and bliss, and rely on external things or others for our happiness. My goal is to show you how to experience sustainable inner wellbeing regardless of your past, external circumstances, your possessions, wealth or social status. And here are the first steps to your total freedom and independence from materialism and consumerism (which are destroying our planet and are the source of human suffering and stress).
The instrument, our human form and mind, is part of the dimension of creation/nature and subject to constant change, time, space and duality/polarities/opposites, where one cannot exist without the other. There is no love without pain, no day without night, no good without bad. So, any joy your mind is experiencing will eventually change into suffering. That is nature. Anything that begins will eventually end. Any happiness created through external means or by other people is only temporary. That’s simply how life is designed. There is absolutely no need to try to change that or to resist it or to wait for miracles. It is as it is.
Your true Self is the unchangeable soul from the other dimension of pure wisdom, bliss and balance, observing the ever-changing game of life! Your true Self is not subject to change, duality or time. And if you are meditating, you might have experienced your true Self for a glimpse. You might have lost your concept and perception of time during meditation, and that´s a sign that you have shifted into your true dimension of unconditional balance.
Meditation can happen when you have created the right inner atmosphere. When you are able to observe your body´s sensations and your mind´s fluctuations without being absorbed by them, without being identified with them, without thinking that this is you.
To create this inner atmosphere that slows down the movements of the mind and allows you to experience total presence and BEING, we can work on several layers.
We have this wonderful instrument we call body and even if we perceive it only as one body, according to Yoga science, this instrument, the body, consists of 5 different bodies.
When these 5 bodies, the layers of your instrument work well and in balance with each other and the universe, you might be able to experience your true Self, you remember who you are, you take your power back, and life will become a joyful experience without suffering.
You can imagine the 5 layers of your human being like lamp shades through which you shine your light and perceive your experience of life.
If all shades are clear and purified, you perceive life as it is, you understand life, you enjoy life without interference from your mind's judgements, you remember who you are and that your body and mind are just your instruments.
When all layers are purified, you shine your true light into the world, your pure love for life, your unconditional joy and balance and you interact with life based on your limitless wisdom and intelligence. You experience life with equanimity and without attaching or identifying with thoughts and emotions, hence without suffering (because you know you are not that).
You can also imagine that each layer gives you a distorted experience of your true Self when you identify with it. Imagine the soul, your SELF like a CRYSTAL. A crystal is always clear but if you put a red object next to it, it appears, read. Now, if you the crystal identifies with your 5 bodies, you don't see yourself anymore for what you really are; a clear crystal.
If you identify with your 5 bodies, you say, I am tall. I am hungry, I am angry, I am the doer, I am the enjoyer etc... (But you are just appearing like that, you are the unchanged crystal - because your true self, the consciousness, the energy, soul is from the unchanging dimension, remember?)
So, when you remember that you are a pure crystal, you are free from all the experiences of the 5 layers of your being.
You observe, but you KNOW that you are not that.
Let´s dive deeper into the Yoga concept of our 5 bodies. Remember, with the tools we learn from Yoga, coaching, therapy or other approaches to wellbeing, we are able to purify the layers of our being so that our true Self, our true light, can shine through and experience life without self-disturbance of the mind. When all your bodies are taken care of and a pleasant inner atmosphere is created, meditation can happen and that´s the moment when you know that you are not body and mind, you are not your story, your worries or your desires. You are just that, soul. Unchanging, unconditional balance. And you can express yourself freely as a human being!
Lord Krishna defines Yoga as “Samatvam Yoga Uchyate” in the Bhagavad Gita.
Yoga is a balanced state. Yoga is a balanced state of the body and mind. Yoga is a balanced state of emotions. Yoga is a balanced state of thought and intellect. Yoga is a balanced state of behavior. We are excited in a situation of pleasure and we become sad when it is a negative situation. Yoga is to maintain equilibrium of the mind in any situation. This equanimity of mind and experiencing that you are not the mind but that the mind is your instrument, that´s the ultimate objective of Yoga.
And to get there, we need to balance all our layers.
The outer layer is the physical body. Beyond that, in more subtler forms exists the energy body, the mind body, the wisdom or intellect body and the bliss body. And beyond the bliss body are you, the center of creation, the operator of all systems, the force that allows all layers of body to function and to perceive life.
Now, if we only consider and take care of our physical body but ignore the other layers of this fantastic instrument, not only are we unable to perceive the full magic of life beyond our 5 senses and never discover all the abilities of this high-tech human body, but our system gets defective and life becomes a physical and mental struggle.
It is like you are having a super developed computer and you keep it clean and make sure it doesn't get scratched or damaged, but you have no idea about its software. It is like never doing an update or never cleaning out the storage. The computer might look nice from the outside, but does not really work well because the subtler elements of it, like the program, the apps, the system it runs on, the computer chip, the wires and the electricity it runs on are never taken care of.
It is like having a highly developed computer, but you are using it only to write simple documents. You are not aware of its possibilities and abilities. If you knew about that, you could do magical things with it. If you knew exactly how to work it instead of randomly using it, allowing everything to happen by chance, you would remember that you are the true operator of it and that you can use it to get almost any result you desire.
The outer layer, the first layer, is our physical body. This body is made of millions of cells that form our skin, flesh, muscles, bones, organs, nerves, and blood. Every cell of our body carries a memory, our DNA, like every other form of creation. Or why does a seed know if it is supposed to grow into an apple tree or a flower?
Just like our mind, our physical body also has a memory, but it’s actually much vaster. That is because the physical body is an expression of the whole history of humankind. Our physical body, our DNA, remembers information from thousands of years back. Our minds might not consciously remember anything about our ancestors, but when we look at old pictures, we might notice things that connect us to our ancestors.
Whilst the human body is made up of 70% water and water carries memory, conclusions could be drawn from new discoveries that human tears can hold a unique memory of an individual being, through the body’s store of water hosting a complete store of information that is linked to individual experience. Everyone is globally connected by the water in the human body which travels through ongoing journeys, whereby information along the way is always stored.
And obviously, emotional baggage is also stored in our physical body. Experiences are not only stored in our mind's memory. Often, the emotional memory we carry because we are not able to let go or to forgive
reflects in a person's body posture or their physical health. This is why in my book Yoga Coaching I show you how you can release emotional baggage through certain physical postures and techniques, tap into that memory and work through this layer of your being and on your energy and mind.
Whatever we consume, accumulates and becomes this body. Let's say you eat an orange, the organs digest the orange, dismantle it into subtle parts and those parts, according to the cells cell's memory, become this body. Let's look at a little child. The body is still small and through the food it consumes it grows into an adult body. According to the memory in its cells, it develops in a certain way. The child's nose will take on the same shape as it's mother's nose. This body is an accumulation of food and a piece of planet earth. It needs food and when it dies it becomes food.
See how this human existence is like any other. We come into this world, then take from the earth, accumulate more matter and at a certain point leave this world again, like any other being. And in the meantime, we ignore this fact. We live as if we were to stay here forever. We waste a lot of time on our short visit to this planet with struggles.
Here´s what you can keep in mind to create a high frequency in your physical body that encourages meditation to happen:
Eat fresh food. Avoid any processed food. Fresh food carries high energy and travels easily through your body while nurturing it.
Avoid eating lots of meat. Animals go through extreme suffering before they land on our plates. We are absorbing the energy of pain and helplessness, fear and rage which are not conducive to our spiritual goals.
Connect with nature, the elements, your natural habitat.
Move and oxygenate. Your body is made to move and through movement, fresh air and deep breathing its various systems enhance their functioning.
Stretch. It releases energetic blocks and allows you to flow with life events instead of feeling resistance to what is.
Touch. Self-massage or any type of treatment helps you to feel safe and cared for, signaling to your nervous system that there is no stress, no danger, no need to be on alert.
The colors you are wearing affect your mood! Keep this in mind when you are dressing your body.
Eat with balance, sleep with balance, move with balance and make life a little bit more uncomfortable, that´s how your engine works best!
Shake it! When shaking your body, it releases cortisol, the stress hormone which is responsible for many physical imbalances. Your nervous system returns to its calm and balanced state. You can also imagine you are shaking off unnecessary energy! Plus, it´s fun!
The next layer I want to talk about is our Energy Body. This body consists of our life force, the Chi like the Chinese call it, or Prana as we would call it in Yoga. It is the vital force that is the driving force behind breath, the senses and all operations of the physical body and mind. It allows us, the operator, the soul, to function in the external world.
In a medical understanding, that would probably be similar to the neurological processes in our body. This energy body works through the physical body because every process in this body needs energy to function, like, for example, the heart needs energy to beat and pump blood.
It is like electricity in your house. Imagine that, like electrical cables, energy channels, meridians or nadis are running through this layer, which allow the other layers to function.
In the energy body, there are 72,000 nadis / energy channels or pathways according to Yoga science. The 72,000 nadis spring from three basic nadis, Ida and Pingala which represent certain qualities of nature, and Shushumna.
Where energy channels meet to distribute the energy in every direction, we call it a Chakra, an energy center, and each energy center is a storehouse and operator for certain aspects, emotions and functions of the human being. In a medical sense, people talk about a Plexus, a point in which many nerves come together to distribute information into the cells to keep them functioning and to communicate with each other.
Ida runs along the left side of the spine and through your left nostril. It represents the feminine aspect of life, Shakti, intuitive and regenerative qualities, the moon energy, coolness. It rules over the left side of the body and our right hemisphere of the brain.
Pingala runs along the right side of the spine and through your right nostril. It represents the masculine aspect of nature, Shiva, logical and active qualities, the sun energy, heat. It activates the right side of our body and the left hemisphere of the brain.
Sushumna runs through the center of the spine. One lives a fulfilling, purposeful, balanced and joyful life when Ida and Pingala are in balance and life energies enter into and run through Sushumna. Makes sense, no?
Sushumna has no quality of its own, like Ida or Pingala. It represents your true Self. It represents EQUANIMITY. Unity instead of Duality.
It is like empty space. If there is empty space, you can create anything you want. Once energies enter into Sushumna your inner balance does not depend on external circumstances anymore.
Wherever you are, whatever happens, you become part of that, but you do not judge, you simply ARE in balance, you experience freedom, you are not disturbed, you know that you are not the mind and its ideas.
Your inner wellbeing does not depend on anything or anyone anymore. Life simply flows through you, you experience life as being a part of it and you are open to explore all the possibilities of life joyfully and the peaks of consciousness!
A balanced Nadi system brings intuition and knowledge together and unfolds the full active and regenerative potential – it allows us to experience balance in life, no matter what happens. It allows us to conduct ourselves also in complex situations with ease, without freaking out and falling mentally and physically off balance.
You might have heard the term Hatha Yoga. Hatha Yoga is one of the supportive systems within the whole of Yoga. "Ha" means "sun" and "tha" means "moon," which represent the two energy flows on either side of the body. The goal of Hatha Yoga is the balancing or centering of these energies. Hatha deals primarily with the physical body and the breath to bring these subtle energies into balance. When that balance has been attained, the body is relaxed, the breath is smooth, slow, and steady, and the mind is calm.
From this stance of equanimity of body, breath and mind, one can then move on to the subtler goals of Yoga through meditation and contemplation. All physical yoga practices are preparing the bodies so that mediation can eventually happen.
You also might want to become aware of the fact that usually, during the day your energy shifts between the left and right channel. Some say every 40 minutes, others say every 90 minutes, but you can try this for yourself. Simply check during the day, which nostril is more active and that will give you an understanding of your thinking patterns and feelings during the day. When you feel a little off balance physically or mentally, you might notice that one nostril is overactive while the other isn’t. You notice that by observing the air passing through your nostrils, checking by closing off one nostril at a time. You slowly become aware how your energy flow is connected to your other bodies and especially to your mental activity.
So, when your left nostril is working better, your right side of the brain is active and when your right nostril works better, your left side of the brain is more active.
If you cut the body open and look in, you will not find those energy channels. But as you become more aware, you will notice the energy is not moving at random, it is moving in established patterns and pathways. There are 72,000 different ways in which the energy moves and we are able to guide our energies back onto a path when we feel off balance through physical yoga practice, breathing practice or meditation, energy work, nutrition, sound/music.
The Ida and Pingala energy channels that run along the left and right side of the spine represent the basic duality in the existence on which life is created. Without these two dualities, life wouldn’t exist as it does right now. In the beginning, everything is primordial, there is no duality. But once creation happens, there is duality, birth and death, good and bad, day and night.
Bringing a balance between the Ida and Pingala and directing the flow of life energy into the central channel Shushumna will make you effective in the world, it will make you handle life well.
Here´s what you can keep in mind to create a high frequency in your physical body that encourages meditation to happen:
Try this breathing practice:
Close your right nostril with your right thumb.
Inhale through left nostril.
Close left nostril with right index finger.
Exhale through right nostril.
Keep left nostril closed. Inhale through right nostril.
Close right nostril.
Exhale left.
Inhale left.
Close left nostril.
Exhale right……..
And here is an energy work tool you can try out. This lesson is part of my one-year course,
The Inner Revolution - learning how to operate your human instruments from within. In one chapter of this course, we are dealing with trauma, using a variety of tools to release traumatic experiences that hold us back from enjoying our life today.
We looked at the physical and energetic body, the next layer is your Mental Body. In this layer your 5 senses operate, and your thoughts, emotions, memories and imagination happen. Your Ego, the mind created identity of who you think you are is operating on this level as well as on the next, the Intellect level.
If you do not operate this part of your human machine, it will work on its own and take over your life.
You will feel out of power and your behavior becomes a mere compulsive reaction to your 5 senses and the external world, including other people's behavior.
Your senses will go outwards, bring back sensations, those will create the desire to have something or to avoid something based on your Ego's ideas of what is right and wrong, what you like or do not like, and if you are unconscious of your power to operate this instrument, you will simply react compulsively to your mind, subconscious mind (where all your life experiences, trauma, limiting beliefs and habits are stored) and the external world.
Your reactions to certain situations will always be the same, even if the results are not contributing to your happiness and wellbeing. That, in return, will leave you with a feeling of being totally out of control or make you a victim of your own thoughts and desires. A victim of the mind made identity you wrongly have identified with. The voice that constantly walks next to you.
If you do not operate this layer from within, you will not consciously respond to life and your mind but will feel that you have to satisfy every desire or else you cannot be at ease. Your inner well being is totally dependent on external circumstances. That means if you cannot get what your mind wants, you are suffering. Your life will be a compulsion and hence a struggle and constant race to satisfy your mind's desires.
The mind made identity, Ego, perceives life as a personal, individual experience. It thinks life evolves around it and is humancentric. Whereas, we have to realize that our human form is interconnected with all life forms, with the universe, the cosmos and all there is, and we are just a tiny accumulation of atoms and elements in the big picture of life.
Certain thoughts and emotions that happen in our mental body can become hurdles in our energetic body and cause imbalance which manifests as unease, anxiety and unhappiness and the other way around, if our energy body is in balance and functioning well, our antennas receive pleasant thoughts which create pleasant emotions and allow us to enjoy life because energy attracts it's similar. That's the universal law of energy.
Here´s how you work on this body:
AWARENESS. Observe your thoughts. Observe this body. Instead of reacting compulsively to every desire, breath, step back, zoom out. Ask yourself: will this reaction bring me closer to my highest goal, inner balance and peace, or further away? Be in control of your actions and responses. Always keep your highest goal in mind. Meditation enhances your awareness in daily life and helps you to determine your actions, your results and hence the quality of your life.
Always focus on the good.
Affirmations.
Gratitude journal.
Forgiveness.
Acceptance.
Letting go of your Ego´s need to be right. Make inner peace your priority.
Stay away from social media, TV, anything that agitates your mind.
Avoid food, drinks that agitate your mind.
Talk to a coach, therapist to resolve emotional baggage and to connect the dots of your past and your story.
Read inspiring books.
Surround yourself with inspiring, uplifting, kind people.
Don´t take things personally. It´s not about you.
Laugh more often. Be playful. Seriousness is a disease.
Stop taking everything seriously. Life is short. Life is a game. Enjoy it!
Stop comparing yourself with others.
Focus on what you have, not on what is missing.
Here´s another video from The Inner Revolution. It helps you to understand how your Ego is the root of all emotional suffering.
The fourth layer of our being is our Wisdom or Intellect Body which constitutes our intellectual faculties, like judgement, discrimination and extraordinary knowledge. Knowledge which is not merely accumulated through our 5 senses but through a deeper perception. By reading sacred texts or listening to virtuous beings, but mostly through meditation, we can gain a deeper and purer understanding of life. On this level, we discern and make decisions. This body is a transitional body between our physical being and our non-physical dimension, a higher perception, the fifth body.
Imagine it is a layer working beyond the thinking and feeling aspects of the mind. It decides between I like and I don't like, right and wrong, useful and not useful. So it is part of our EGO, our I AM - NESS. When we manage to create a positive and calm atmosphere in our mental body, when we make peace with our memories and stop reacting compulsively to our mind's desires, then we can use the powerful energy of EGO, I AM, and our wisdom of the intellect body to go within, to search for our true self.
Purifying and taking care of this body means working on our ability to discriminate about what brings us closer to our ultimate goal and to act consciously on this knowledge.
It means tapping into our innate intelligence and logic. Since we mostly act upon our beliefs, which are part of the mind / ego, we have to take a look there first.
It is important to understand that from the day we are born we are accumulating experience and intellectual knowledge. Based on the beliefs, values, ideas about how the world works, how we should be and how others should see and treat us, we make judgments and decisions. The intellect is like a sharp knife, as my teacher says. It can be very useful, but it can also be very destructive. Imagine you are identified strongly with the belief that people who follow a different faith, have different manners and approaches to life than you do, are bad, are not worthy or have no right in expressing themselves. If you base your decisions on those beliefs, your intellect might motivate you to do harmful actions.
So, taking care of this body means feeding it with RIGHT KNOWLEDGE.
Right knowledge will help you to take decisions that bring you closer to your ultimate goal: a peaceful and joyful inner atmosphere.
Right knowledge or valid knowledge as described in the ancient scriptures is acquired by seeing something yourself.
Another way of taking care of this body is by acquiring valid knowledge through inference/conclusion. For example, making friends with a person from a totally different background and belief system.
And another way of taking care of your intellect body, feeding it with valid knowledge, so you can take decisions which lead you closer to your goal, a joyful harmonious life, from a reliable authority or person who really knows what they are talking about.
See, if you feed your intellect body with unconfirmed knowledge, like from social media, gossip, conspiracy theories, extremist groups etc, it is dangerous to base your decisions on that.
Use our intellect to take off the blinds that were put on our eyes by our society, education and mentality.
Make decisions that really get us where we want to be and not where others want us to be.
We can also purify and take care of this body through self-inquiry and the study of spiritual, ancient, sacred texts.
To really feel empowered, we have to use our innate intelligence instead of simply following common ideas that somehow add to someone else's accumulation of power and wealth, but not to our happiness and health and not to life's and earth's either. Making up your own definition of success, fulfillment, happiness, love. That means using our power! That means WAKING UP.
The last layer of that human being which is the closest to our true Self, the soul, is the Bliss Body. It is not physical in nature and cannot be described or defined but can just be experienced. It is a non-physical dimension of this life form. When we have understood, cleared, purified and know how to operate the other 4 bodies well, we are able to tap into this body. That is when we experience bliss. That is when we experience happiness with no strings attached to any external circumstance. When we tap into this body, we get an idea of who we truly are and experience life in its pure form without the judgements, preferences, aversions or stored impressions of our mind.
This is the closest layer to the SOUL, you! We do not actually take care of it, we rather try to get there. When we are aware of this part of our instrument, we experience a joy, a peace that is beyond the mind, that means it is not created by an external stimulus, nothing that has caused us to be happy or feel love or peace. It is not a mental reaction to something, it is simply being blissful.
Maybe you can remember a moment of your life when you were just happy, you just felt totally ok, like nothing was missing at all. That is when you tap into the bliss body. And as you can guess, you can get there through meditation!
Here´s your practice for today - SELF INQUIRY
Ask yourself:
WHO AM I ?
Now OBSERVE HOW THOUGHTS COME UP, how your mind tries to respond with the usual answers.
Instead of entering into an internal dialogue with those thoughts, you ask
TO WHOM DO THESE THOUGHTS OCCUR?
The answer that probably comes up will be
TO ME! and there you go again,
BUT WHO AM I?
Do you have certain beliefs that motivate you to act and respond to live events and others in a way that is not conducive to your inner peace and balance and the greater good? You can always do a software update of your mind, remember that beautiful soul!
I hope this was enlightening and inspiring and just to let you know, in my course THE INNER REVOLUTION that runs over a whole year, you will learn everything about your instruments, the human mind and body. You will learn about every department of your mind and how to operate it from within, about different emotions and how to deal with them, you will work with your energies and the elements, discover traumatic events that led to limiting beliefs which are holding you back from living the life you deserve. You will learn how to integrate meditation into your daily life, how to create harmonious relationships, get a tool box full of practices and strategies to revolutionize your inner atmosphere and ultimately be ready to meet your true SELF and live a self-determined life, create your own definition of success and experience happiness without the help of external means.
I am looking forward to connecting with you!
You are loved beautiful soul.
